At the encouragement of childhood friend Kida Masaomi, Ryugamine Mikado leaves his hometown to attend Raira Academy in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. On the day he arrives in Tokyo, full of excitement, he witnesses the “Headless Rider”, an urban legend of a phantom motorcyclist, riding away in a black motorcycle at high speed. Revolving around Mikado, Kida, the students at Raira Academy, and the colorful personalities of bodyguard Heiwajima Shizuo and informant Orihara Izaya, this is a fantasy violence drama set in Ikebukuro.

Real-life scenic spots in Ikebukuro appear in this title, such as the “ikefukuro” owl statue inside Ikebukuro Station, the owl and the treble clef sculptures near the station, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, and more. At the Sunshine City mixed-use commercial complex in east Ikebukuro (pictured is the Sunshine City 60 Street”), are attractions such as the Sky Circus Sunshine 60 Observatory, where visitors can catch unobstructed views of Tokyo, the Sunshine Aquarium, and the Konica-Minolta Planetarium, “Manten”.
